How to Connect Blackberry as Modem Over Bluetooth?

How to Connect Blackberry as Modem Over Bluetooth?

The instruction below is targeted for those who’s using AT&T network, and Windows 7 bluetooth-enabled laptop. If you probably want to check the reference of this tutorial if you’re using the other network. By following this instruction, you will be able to use the AT&T 3G network to browse the internet over the Bluetooth enabled laptop :)

On your Blackberry

  1. Options –> Mobile Network –> Network Mode –> 3G & 2G (Optional)
This step is to ensure that you could use the 3G network
  2. Bluetooth –> (Blackberry Button) –> Enable Bluetooth
  3. Bluetooth is enabled, (Blackberry Button) –> Add Device –>Listen (Step 2, On your Laptop)
  4. There will be request from the laptop which needs to be approved, make sure that this request is your laptop! You could select, “don’t ask anymore” so that your PC could make a continuous request to the phone. Once this is setup correctly, it will say that there will be a paired device on your phone, supposedly using the name of your laptop (e.g. Grady-PC).

On your Laptop

  1. Start –> Control Panel –> Device and Printer (Detailed-view)
  2. Add a Device –> Select the Device (Step 3, On your Blackberry)
  3. By this step, you must ensure that your laptop is paired with the phone. Windows will automatically install the driver, it will say that there is a problem, but don’t worry, fortunately the modem is correctly installed automatically.
  4. On Device and Printer, now you should be able to see Blackberry 9000:
  5. Double click on the Blackberry 9000 –> Hardware tab –> Select the Standard Modem over Bluetooth link
  6. Click Properties –> Change Settings –> Diagnostic –> Query Modem, this is to test if the modem is installed correctly, then you should see something like this:
    ATQ0V1E0 – OK
    AT+GMM – BlackBerry IPmodem
    AT+FCLASS=? – OK
    AT#CLS=? – OK
    AT+GCI? – OK
    AT+GCI=? – OK
ATI1 – Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI2 – Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI3 – Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI4 – Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI5 – Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI6 – Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
ATI7 – Research In Motion / BlackBerry IPmodem
  7. Advanced Tab –> Fill this onto the Extra Initialization Command:
    AT+cgdcont=1,”IP”,”WAP.CINGULAR”
  8. Click OK on Standard Modem Over Bluetooth Link Properties
  9. Click OK on Blackberry 9000 Properties
  10. Start –> Control Panel –> Network and Sharing Center –> Set up a new Connection or Network –> Dial-up Connection –> Standard Modem Over Bluetooth Link
  11. Enter *99# as the Dial-up Phone Number, Leave blank the rest
  12. Just wait until you’re connected
  13. Surf online! :)

Hope this tutorial helps! I’m also very impressed with the speed of the internet, which now I could take anywhere AT&T has service on! I might have missed something, as I’m trying to recall what I just did, but here’s the reference: Blackberry Forums
